Huset Oceanen has hosted musicians, artists, writers, producers, and dance and theater associations in the former Oceanographic Institute at Stigbergstorget since 1997. The building is owned by a non-profit association and managed by its board. Today, Oceanen serves as an important hub in Gothenburg´s independent cultural scene. The name references the building´s origins—constructed in 1938 for oceanographic research as an institute under the University of Gothenburg. The property is located in a conservation area for culturally and historically valuable buildings and is a well-preserved example of functionalism. The cultural association that moved in after the oceanographers outgrew the space hoped to create a place for culture that, like the world´s oceans, blends influences from all continents.
